Most towel rails are kind of a drag. You turn them on and wait forever for the water to heat up, or you just hope the room gets warm enough to dry your towel. Infrared (IR) is different. Instead of trying to heat the air around the towel, it beams heat directly into the fabric. It’s the difference between waiting for a room to warm up and stepping into a beam of sunlight. To make these “smart,” we just plug them into Zigbee or Wi-Fi relays. Basically, we’re giving the heater a digital brain so you can control the power from your phone.

The best part? It’s fast. Like, really fast. Since we’re using IR elements, there’s no water to boil or pipes to warm. You hit a button in your app, the relay clicks, and the rail is hot in seconds. Your towels dry way quicker because the energy actually penetrates the fibers. No more damp towels hanging around for hours.
Setting It and Forgetting It
I love setting these up to handle the “winter chill” automatically. We can link the heaters to a hub that keeps an eye on your bathroom’s temperature and humidity. If the room dips below 18°C, the system just kicks in and pre-heats everything for you. And if you don’t want a blunt “on or off” switch, you can use PWM controllers. This lets you dial in the heat so the rails don’t get scorching hot and waste electricity. It’s just a steady, comfortable warmth.
A Few Things to Watch Out For
It’s not all plug-and-play; there are a couple of traps. First, high-wattage rails pull a lot of power. You’ve got to make sure your wiring is thick enough to handle that initial surge, or you’re asking for trouble. Then there’s the humidity. Bathrooms are wet, and smart relays hate water. If you don’t put your controllers in an IP65-rated waterproof box, the moisture will eventually fry the boards. One last tip: give your towels some breathing room. If you pack them too tightly against an IR emitter, you might actually scorch the fabric. Give them space, and they’ll be toasted and fluffy every time.
