
Picking the Right Wattage for Your Waterproof Infrared Heaters
When you’re setting up heat for a chicken coop or any place that gets damp, you have to think about it differently. You aren’t trying to warm up the air—that’s a waste of money. You’re warming the birds and the ground directly. Get the wattage wrong, and you’re looking at a bad time. Either you’ll have cold spots where the birds shiver, or worse, you’ll accidentally burn them. Getting the power right I usually look at the size of the space and how well it’s insulated. If you’ve got a tiny brooding area, keep the wattage low so you don’t cook the little guys. But as the space gets bigger, you’ve got a choice: go for higher wattage or just add more heat points. I prefer adding more points. Why? Because if there’s only one hot spot, the birds will all pile on top of each other to stay warm. It’s called “clustering,” and it’s a nightmare because they can actually smother each other. Just a heads-up: high-wattage bulbs put out a ton of heat, but they’re pickier. If your voltage jumps around, they tend to burn out faster. Plus, make sure your circuit can actually handle the load. There’s nothing worse than a breaker tripping in the middle of a freezing winter night. The deal with waterproofing In a coop, moisture is everywhere—bedding, breath, spills. If you use a standard bulb, that moisture hits the hot glass and crack. Thermal shock. That’s why you need the sealed gaskets and moisture-resistant coatings. They keep the water away from the electrical bits so you don’t have a disaster on your hands. But here’s the catch. Those heavy-duty waterproof housings are great, but they can trap heat around the socket. If you shove a high-wattage lamp into a tight, sealed fixture, you might actually melt the socket. Give the fixture some breathing room so the heat can escape. Wiring it up without the headache Use heat-resistant cabling. Period. These lamps pull a constant, heavy load. If you’re running ten 250W lamps on one line, that’s 2.5kW of power humming along non-stop. It adds up. My advice? Hook them up to timers or thermostats. Let the power cycle on and off. Your filaments will last way longer, and your electricity bill won’t make you want to cry at the end of the month.
