
Getting Your CNC Glass Preheating Right
If you’ve spent any time cutting glass on a CNC, you know the headache of internal stress. One wrong move or a cold spot, and you’ve got a crack. That’s why we use infrared (IR) lamps to get the glass warm—and fast. But here’s the thing: not all heat is created equal.
Why “Standard” Isn’t Always Enough
Most IR lamps just throw out a broad range of energy. That works fine for basic glass. But the moment you start adding dopants or special additives to change the glass properties, things get tricky. Those additives create specific “absorption peaks.” Think of it like a lock and key. If your lamp is emitting energy at a wavelength the glass just doesn’t “see,” that energy simply bounces off the surface. You’re paying for the power, but the glass isn’t feeling it. That’s where we come in. We tweak the filament and the quartz envelope to shift the emission curve. We basically tune the lamp to hit those exact peaks, making sure the heat actually sinks into the material instead of wasting your electricity and slowing down your cycle times.
The Give and Take
Now, there is a trade-off. When we narrow the beam to hit a specific target, you might lose some of that raw, brute-force wattage. You get way more efficiency, but less total “oomph.” To fix that, we just adjust your power supply or the length of the lamp. It’s a simple balance to make sure you still hit your ramp-up speeds without sacrificing the precision of the heat.
Making it Work in Your Shop
We designed these to be drop-in replacements. You shouldn’t have to rebuild your entire heating array or mess around with your reflectors just to make them fit. One tip, though:get your alignment spot on. If the lamp is even slightly skewed, you’ll get hot spots. And hot spots lead to thermal shock, which is exactly what we’re trying to avoid. Also, keep an eye on your cooling. These lamps put out a lot of heat, and you don’t want that heat soaking back into your CNC electronics and frying a board. Get the cooling right, align the lamps, and you’re good to go.
